A health profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, and the effects of these disorders on the function of the nervous system and general health. There is an emphasis on manual treatments including spinal adjustment and other joint and soft-tissue manipulation.
Why should I visit a chiropractor?
Although chiropractors are best known for treating back and neck pain, which they do very well, patients also consult chiropractors regarding a range of other, related conditions like headaches, prevention of migraines, sciatica, joint pains including hip and knee pain from osteoarthritis, general pains and aches, ankle sprains, plantar fasciitis, cramps, elbow pain and tennis elbow, lumbago, minor sports injuries, muscle spasms, shoulder complains, or tension and inability to relax.
What is a chiropractic adjustment?
Adjustments can be performed in different manners. Maria does a blend of light touches along the spine, and specific, low force, quick “thrusts” delivered by hand or delivered by a spring-loaded instrument called an “Activator”. The process is gentle and not painful. The goal of the adjustment is to improve spinal motion and the body’s physical function
Does the adjustment hurt?
Adjustments usually don’t hurt. Sometimes they might be slightly painful during the adjustment but the vast majority of patients feel relief immediately after the adjustment. In most cases the adjustment is painless. Maria has safely adjusted people of all ages from small children to pregnant women, right up to practice members ninety-three years with the gentle adjusting techniques she uses. The style of each adjustment is tailored to each person – their history and their preferences. Some patients prefer not to hear the “popping” sounds so she uses the Activator or light touch techniques and mobilizations, while still achieving the same great results as the techniques with more physical strong input.
Are adjustments safe?
YES! Chiropractic, when done correctly is safe and effective for all ages. Talking to Maria about your health history and your wishes will help shape the care that she provides for you.
What is the popping sound during an adjustment?
It doesn’t happen every time, but chiropractic patients often hear a popping sound when joints are being adjusted. Don’t worry. Nothing’s wrong. What you’re hearing is called joint cavitation and it is not at all unexpected or harmful. That little pop is thought to be caused by a change in joint tension. When the chiropractor performs the adjustment, the joint space opens minutely allowing a release of pressure. The cracking sound is nothing more than a result of the positive mechanical change which yields increased movement and improvement in overall function. Either way, no worries. That little pop won’t hurt you. Also, don’t be concerned if you don’t hear the popping sound when you receive a chiropractic adjustment. You will still get the therapeutic benefit of the chiropractic adjustment whether you hear anything or not. It’s the movement of the joint that is significant, not the pop.
Will I feel better after being adjusted?
Your care is unique to YOU, and how your body heals and responds is also unique. Most people are very happy with the results of chiropractic care. Many of them feel relief from pain almost immediately after an adjustment. It’s also possible that the pain may require several to many adjustments to fade. Rarely, a small percentage of people may experience a temporary increase in their symptoms before they start to get better. No matter what course your recovery takes, you should also know that beyond the removal of your symptoms, chiropractic care offers an opportunity for much greater overall health, if you choose to use it for that purpose as well.
How often will I have to come in?
That's easy...come as often as you want to heal, feel great, defy age, and live pain-free! Many people love to get adjusted weekly, including Maria, to keep their body, especially their spine and nervous system, healthy on a regular basis as there are many wellness benefits to chiropractic care.
On your initial consultation Maria will evaluate your case history and your examination results and provide you with her care instructions for initial care. Because each individual is unique on every level it’s difficult to know how many times you will need to be adjusted to reach each of your health goals. For practical purposes we can estimate your initial schedule, but this is subject to change according to your rate of progress and goals. One thing is sure: Your goals and expectations will determine your care plan- frequency and duration.
What kind of wellness benefits can chiropractic provide?
Many people think of chiropractors as pain specialists, whether it is back pain, neck pain, headaches, arm pain, leg pain, etc. Chiropractic care is so much more than just pain relief! Chiropractic is an all-natural way to improve posture, boost immune system, reduce muscle tension and stress, improve range of motion, enhance athletic performance, and provide support during pregnancy. If you want to have a healthy lifestyle, chiropractic is a great choice to incorporate into your life choices!
What if I feel fine?
That is always up to you. However, when your symptoms fade, monthly or quarterly adjustments are recommended as those that commit to regular care find their problem rarely returns and they enjoy a higher quality of life and health.
